Education is a social process. The form and contents of education of any age and society are the product of society-education dialects. The transformation in the education system of India from the ancient Gurukul system to today’s virtual learning system is a reflection of the changing social context. The new social realities, particularly the interplay between democratization of education, emergence of knowledge- society and globalization greatly influence the education process of all societies.
Netaji Subhas Open University represents an alternative approach to higher learning. It stands apart from a highly formal, institutionalised and centrally administered system of education. Conceptually, it can be viewed as a system drawing upon the best elements in formal and non-formal education and it (i) offers easy access to the learners, (ii) brings education to the doorstep of the learner and (iii) distributes fairly quality-education with (a) consultancy, (b) study materials, (c) interactive radio-counselling (Gyan Vani, F.M.
